An incredible Grand Tour period lava cameo bracelet in solid 14 carat gold, set with seven fabulously finely carved lava cameos depicting the classical Roman gods who gave their names to the days of the week!
There's Diana as the Moon for Monday, Mars for Tuesday, Mercury for Wednesday, Jupiter for Thursday, Venus for Friday, Saturn for Saturday, and Apollo for Sunday. This type of jewellery was brought back from their Grand Tours by the gentry of Europe as souvenirs.
The quality of the carving is unusually high - with realism and stylised influence, and astounding detail - from their expressions and skin tone, to their hair, minute clothing folds and accoutrements, each is unique. It has an integrated gold box hinge clasp, and an early added gold safety chain increases the security of the clasp.
As expected from its age there are one or two nicks/chips to one or two cameos, but no cracks or significant loss. A few old repairs can be seen to the back of the links. It dates from around 1870 and is 7” wearable length - rings can be added to increase its length.
It weighs 37.1 grams and each cameo measures 28 x 23 mm.
