Description
Mercury gives Jupiter’s child, the infant Bacchus to Io to protect the baby from Jupiter's jealous wife. This beautiful late Victorian cameo depicting a lovely myth from Roman times is hand carved from natural shell and is set into a high quality scalloped 9 carat gold mount for wear as a brooch. Just visible to the back is the carver's signature.It dates from around 1910 and is in excellent, fully wearable condition throughout, with no loss or damage. The mount is stamped '9ct' for 9 carat gold and the maker's mark EM. It weighs 12.9 grams and measures 2 ¼ x 1 ¾ inches. The final photo shows it with a US penny (1 cent) coin for scale, which measures 19 mm / ¾ of an inch diameter.
