Muncie Pottery started production of art pottery in 1919 as the Muncie Clay Products Company. Muncie Pottery started as a subsidiary of the German-American Clay Company. Muncie Pottery like so many of the other American art pottery companies closed its doors as a victim of the depression in 1939.
This 6 inch tall 'Pepo' vase was designed by well known designer Reuben Haley. Pepo is Latin for melon..We believe this shape to belong to the figural line of Muncie pottery which includes abstract organic forms reminiscent of melons and gourds. This vase is glazed in an experimental gold glaze that has several areas were the glaze did not hold. Even with these imperfections, it is one of the more unique pieces of Muncie Art Pottery that I have seen - and it is all due to the glaze.
Exceptional vase in that it is undamaged, no chips, no cracks, no repairs, no scratches to glaze. FREE from crazing. Glaze misses. Any non-perfections are from the firing/manufacturing process. The white spots are studio light reflections.
