STUNNING MUSEUM QUALITY ANTIQUE HARDSTONE CAMEO, 14K
Remarkable carving in carnelian agate, amazing size, Flora, goddess of flowers

This is a stunning museum quality antique cameo carved from carnelian agate
hardstone. Remarkable size for an agate piece and incredibly detailed.
Only the best
cameo artists worked with agate, as it was a difficult and
unforgiving material.  This is
a rather large piece of hardstone,  which
adds to its beauty and collectability.
Depicts Flora, goddess of flowers.
She was a harbinger of spring and renewal,
and as such was a popular
gift in Victorian times for new brides and mothers.
Carver created
a
very detailed profile, dripping with Renaissance art influences,
such as the full, open back, with exposed shoulder, strong yet
delicate
facial features and the complex entertaining of the
hair with roses, daisies
and leaves. Carver expertly kept the
darker shade of the agate on the flowers
to create depth and contrast. No cracks or flea bites along the border. Bezel set
in 14K mount, original to the piece, with large extended border and four wrapped accents as well as inner etched accent border. Back hook allows to add watch or other type pendant.  Some etching or signature on reverse from carver. Hard to make out.
